Do It Yourself (DIY) SIP Service

How you can Do It Yourself with a SIP ServiceDIY SIP Service

You can easily setup a cloud SIP service with any SIP enabled PBX system. SIP trunking is a low cost way of communication. This is possible only if you have a VOIP gateway or a PBX. Ensure that your PBX is SIP capable. Here are the steps on how you can setup cloud SIP service with any SIP enabled PBX system:

  1. Get a Static Internet Address – The first step to setup a cloud SIP service is to get a Static Internet Address. You cannot use a Dynamic DNS hostname. Make sure that the IP address that you specify can be an endpoint for all inbound calls.
  2. Don’t Use Firewall Rules – When setting up cloud SIP service, you must ensure that there is no firewall or NAT blocking between the two servers that are used and the SIP enable PBX. You can, however, enable firewall for limiting traffic to the servers. You can also setup a port forwarding if security is an issue.
  3. Get Compatible PBX Platform – This is one of the pre-requisites for getting a SIP service. Contact the customer service of the SIP Company if you are not sure if your SIP is PBX enabled.
  4. Ensure that IP-PBX is Properly Configured – Now determine the number that you want to use as a pilot number or the primary number. Click on “SIP trunking” in the preferences, enable it and enter your IP-PBX’s address.

Benefits of Using SIP Trunking – Using SIP trunking has numerous benefits:

  • You don’t have to login or register for SIP service, since all your calls will be routed through the IP-PBX. Therefore, even if you do not have internet connection temporarily, you will start receiving calls the moment your connection is restored.
  • Routing all calls through your IP-PBX will save you from having to get any further configuration done. Therefore, you can add more than one number to your account and calls from all the numbers will be routed through your SIP trunk.
  • Save bandwidth, as you do not need SIP registration. All unwanted calls can be sent to the devices behind NAT/firewalls.
  • The best part of SIP trunking is the ‘pilot’ number concept. Whatever called ID number is present down the trunk, if it is unrecognized, then it will be set to trunk number. This number is your pilot number and simplifies the configuration. Therefore, there are no rejected outbound calls.

When setting up SIP trunking network connection, first set up a VLAN. If you are using a VPN server, then the VLAN should be setup between the Mediation server and the VPN server. All routing rules should be to the Mediation server only.

Using a SIP service can help you save a lot of money when making long distance calls. It eliminates IP-PSTN gateways since it connects to your ITSP directly without going through public network. It eliminates all redundant networks and your goal is of a single network.

Follow the steps given above to set up a cloud SIP service and have a hassle free and inexpensive communication experience.
