Verify that Your Internet Bandwidth is Sufficient

Because SIP trunking uses the internet, rather than traditional telephone lines to deliver voice to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), you must be sure that you have enough bandwidth to get great voice quality. Today’s business broadband connections, including Cable, T1, Metro Ethernet and DSL are generally sufficient for most business SIP needs.  This post explains in detail exactly how to calculate the amount of bandwidth you will need to support SIP trunking based on the number of expected concurrent calls.

Enable QoS on Your Router

Quality of Service, referred to as QoS  is a router setting that prioritizes voice traffic over data traffic. Some internet activities, such as streaming or downloading large files, require significant Internet bandwidth.  Without QoS, this can cause poor quality voice calls and problems known as jitter and lag. Most business class routers have QoS capabilities. If yours doesn’t, we recommend changing to one that does.

Test Your Deployment

Your exact combination of PBX equipment, internet service provider and data network architecture is unique. Before you purchase SIP channels, it is smart to test the service in your environment. We advise against selecting any vendor that won’t offer you the opportunity to test the solution before you commit.

Choose a Vendor that Leverages a Tier 1 Network

Only Tier-1 carriers are directly connected to the structure of the internet. Tier 2 or 3 network providers can sometimes offer a lower price, but the added level of infrastructure that separates them from the internet increases the risk of poor audio quality, loss of dial tone and jitter.
