How to Improve the Quality of Your Internet Calls with SIP Services

Communication between customers and business must be clear for customers to value the service. A customer that can’t be understood on the phone will be frustrated with other aspects of the business.

Avoiding poor call quality gives a business a sense of professionalism. Improved call quality lowers customer satisfaction and promotes dialog.

Ensuring a strong voice connection changes from year to year. Currently, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services surged in popularity through their convenience and price. Fewer and fewer people have landline telephones, but more and more people have Internet access and make internet calls.

Businesses need to bridge the gap in communication to reach customers. Staying in business means understanding and providing internet call alternatives. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking combines the worlds of call center phone systems with VoIP usage to create strong, cheap connections.

SIP for Internet Calls

SIP works by connecting packets of data (in this case voice data) to a telephone switch. Unlike traditional telephone switching systems, SIP utilizes dynamic processing features to improve call quality. With a traditional landline, the quality can only rise to the quality fo the lines and degrades over distance.

Because SIP trunks don’t have a physical location, but a digital location, they can manage for distance by bouncing the packets of voice data through the shortest digital route. Buffers can reduce issues such as latency and jitter.

Breaking it down, SIP improves internet calls by acting as a type of VIP service for voice data packets. Packets get guided to where they need to go and are accounted at each junction.

SIP services do a lot of work behind the scenes. Their increasing popularity and power give strong indicators that they work. But how exactly do they work?

How Internet Calls Work

A VoIP call, unsurprisingly, doesn’t call a static phone number but instead calls a dynamic IP address. This address gets assigned to a username within a network. SIP trunk works by connecting this IP information to a standard phone system.

Internet data transfers work through chunks of information known as packets. Packets come in a lot of varieties. Voice data packets can get lost in a normal VoIP call because they are treated like other packets.

SIP gives voice data packets more specific treatment.

SIP can be considered a combination of translator and guide. The guide keeps the packets from getting lost to jitter and latency while also translating them to physical phone system locations.

Utilizing SIP trunks takes advantage of the businesses already established phone lines and numbers. SIP digitally connects these phones to internet calls being made by VoIP or other SIP trunks. The translation is not only seamless but self-correcting, which provides the higher quality of VoIP with the convenience of a traditional line.

Common VoIP Issues (and how SIP Corrects Them)

While VoIP usage has skyrocketed in past years, partially because of its advantages over traditional landlines in regards to quality, cost, and availability, there are new issues that have come along with it.

A lot of technical aspects influence the quality of internet calls. Many of these issues deal with how information gets transferred. Though internet calls have better quality partially because of their speed, they gain that speed through some convoluted means.

To understand these issues better the terms associated should be addressed. Terms for the most common issues faced:

  • Choppiness
  • Packet Loss
  • Jitter
  • Latency

Choppiness

Choppiness occurs on internet calls when data gets interrupted. This creates audio splicing which makes the call break up and go in and out. Often security measures create this issue.

Security features, such as firewalls, hold and data packets back to ensure they are safe. Whitelisting data that goes through VoIP gets risky because VoIP connects to computers.

SIP trunks fix this issue by removing the dangers that firewalls need to catch. Since SIP translates the voice data packets to a phone, rather than a computer.

Packet Loss

The most common predicators of packet loss come from network congestion. Network become overtaxed and can’t hold and transfer all their information simultaneously. When this occurs some of the information can get lost.

SIP services offer a valuable alternative to network traffic handling by dedicating bandwidth specifically to the task. They perform this primarily by knowing how much traffic voice packets take and separating them from the rest of the internet data traffic.

Latency

Packets of information take time to travel from their origin to their destination. Internet calls move voice data packets faster than landline calls by translating the voice information into more easily transferable units.

While VoIP systems transfer data faster than landlines, they don’t do so instantly. The amount of time between the transmission and reception fo a data packet is called latency.

SIP reduces latency by reducing loss and jitter. Buffering systems hold the info just long enough that delay at the intro doesn’t translate into delay during the call itself.

Jitter

A product of the information age, jitter represents the latency between when a packet leaves and when it arrives. Because data packets store information and get sent through translations, they don’t always travel in a tradition or chronological pattern.

Basically, jitter occurs when a packet containing information later in a string arrives before information earlier in the string. Jitter represents a form of bad time travel.

Buffering systems within SIP trunks fix this by making certain the packets don’t get lost and arrive in a timely fashion so the order doesn’t get lost.
